ABOUT EVERGREEN, ALABAMA

​Evergreen, Alabama, known as the Emerald City, is a 20.01 sq. mi city sits in the southwest region of the state of Alabama, which is the capital (county seat) of Conecuh county.

Population
Evergreen has a current population of 3,783. 60% of this population are of the age range of infant to 19 years old. Approximately, Seven hundred and thirty-five (735) residents within this city alone are seniors.


Education
The current city holds up to 6 schools, ranging from primary to secondary levels, such as:
  • Evergreen Elementary School (Public PK -5, Current Enrollment: 400)
  • Genesis Innovative School ( Public K-12, Current Enrollment: 559)
  • Lyeffion High School (Public PK-8, Current Enrollment: 178)
  • Hillcrest High School (Public 9-12, Current Enrollment: 358)
  • Marshall Middle School (Public 6-8, Current Enrollment: 158)

​ Higher Education
Evergreen is also the home of Reid State Technical college. Reid State hosts a dual-enrollment program, partnering with the primary and secondary schools within the city.


Economy
Evergreen’s local economy has some challenges that could benefit from the presence of an initiative such as ReFresh Evergreen. Here’s a snapshot of it’s economy.
  • Poverty Rate is 22.3% over the statewide
  • Evergreen experienced a 10% increase in household annual income rates in 2019, averaging $32,000 for household annual income rate, which is 49% below the average of household annual income nationwide.
  • Businesses in Evergreen consists of fast food franchises, one grocery store, various shipping companies, as well as hospitality franchises.
  • As of 2019, 35% of the city’s employment is supported by it’s local economy. Unemployment rate in Evergreen was about 12% over the state’s average rate of 4.8%.

Crime
Evergreen has an extensively high crime rate in comparison to the nationwide average. Crime rates increased on an average of 492 incidents per year between 2006-2017. Currently, the ratio of crime per resident has been 49 per 1,000.


Community Resources
Community resources in Evergreen are currently limited and primarily supported by local or statewide government funding. The only community center present within the city limits is a currently inactive recreational center that was used for personal recreation and sports activities. In the history of Evergreen. there have not been any community empowerment, artistic, life wellness, academic enrichment programming that were readily available for it’s residents.

Why Evergreen, Alabama?

Within the county of Conecuh, Evergreen is known as the place to go for whatever is needed for it’s residents and neighbors. However, over the years, Evergreen has seen tremendous overturn with the launching of new businesses that eventually fold and the lack of resources that will continue to improve quality of life. Families across the city have expressed publicly that “…there is nothing for us {primarily the youth} to do”.

After thorough research, there has not been any reports of sustainable community creative/performance arts programs, life empowerment services, academic enrichment, and wellness resources in the history of Evergreen, Alabama. The ReFresh Evergreen Project is designed to invest these resources and opportunities that will support the goal of seeing Evergreen refreshed.

Through this initiative, we desire to inspire wellness and change, empower one’s life, as well as refresh one’s outlook on life and what it has to offer. As a result, we know that the strength and pride of this city will be revived, the solutions that are needed to help families will be given, and the quality of life can improve.
